CinePlay 1.7 for Mac - M1 / Big Sur support, UI refresh and general polish

CinePlay 1.7 is a major update to our media player for video and audio professionals.

M1 and Big Sur support

CinePlay runs natively on M1 Macs and is compatible with macOS 11 Big Sur.

UI refresh

We've improved the icons and UI elements to look nicer, especially on Retina displays. In particular, we overhauled the Kollaborate file browser to be more user friendly and up to date with the icons currently used on the site.

General polish

We've made small bug fixes and tweaks to improve the software in a lot of areas, but especially Kollaborate integration. The whole workflow of authorizing your account, opening a cloud file and making comments / annotations on it is much smoother.

We're also now caching hoverscrub thumbnails, which should improve scrubbing performance for very large media files or slow storage drives.

CinePlay 1.5.5 for Mac - Ganged Playheads overhaul, window tiling and UI tweaks

Last week we released CinePlay for Mac 1.5.5, a minor update to our professional media player with some useful new changes and fixes.

Ganged Playheads overhaul

We've made significant changes under-the-hood to our Ganged Playheads feature, which allows you to play two or more files together in sync. We've improved the reliability and accuracy of the feature and fixed a couple of situations where it was possible for the videos to become unsynchronized from each other.

When entering Gang mode, the windows now automatically tile to fit on the screen, making it easy to compare videos side-by-side. We also now indicate Gang mode in the title bar of each window to make it clearer when the feature is enabled.

Window tiling

As well as occuring automatically in Gang mode, you can also manually tile documents to fit on the screen at any time from the Window menu.

UI tweaks

We've made lots of improvements to the UI, including adding a blue area to show the in/out range and fixing some issues with drawing markers and in/out points.

CinePlay 1.7 for iOS released with iPhone marker support

Last week we released a major new update for CinePlay, our iOS app for local and cloud media playback that's aimed at video professionals.

The most significant change in this version is that markers are now supported on iPhone devices. Why was this not supported before? The main reason was screen real-estate, but with iPhones now increasing in screen size plus the repeated recent requests we got for iPhone support, we decided to re-evaluate the feasibility of adding this feature. You can now add, edit, view and delete comments directly from your phone.

Other changes include improved stability and minor bug fixes.

CinePlay for iOS is a powerful mobile playback and note-taking tool for video professionals. To find out more, see the feature list, read the user manual or watch the overview video. Kollaborate customers can get cloud functionality in CinePlay free of charge with the CinePlay: Kollaborate Edition app.

CinePlay 1.5.3 for Mac - marker color shortcuts, trackpad seeking and more

CinePlay 1.5.3 offers some great new additions to our Mac media player aimed at video professionals.

Marker color shortcut keys

You can now use Shift in combination with a number key to add a marker of a specific color.

Additionally, the last marker color chosen is now remembered when adding a new marker, making it quicker to add colored markers to a video.

Trackpad seeking

Scrolling left and right on your trackpad will now seek within a file, as will adjusting the scroll wheel horizontally for those using a mouse.

 Improved default filenames

When exporting between in and out points, CinePlay will now include the range of the in and out points as part of the filename, making it easier to export multiple parts of a movie quickly without having to keep renaming the default filename. It will even take into account your timecode display settings (timecode, elapsed time or frames) when showing the range.

Other changes

  • Exported still frames now show the frame position in the timecode format you selected in the View menu (timecode, elapsed time or frames)
  • The Markers window now scrolls and selects the new marker when you add one from the player
  • CinePlay now remembers the last-chosen still image format
  • Improved the visibility of black markers in the timeline
  • Fixed an issue where the marker edit popup may still appear even if you hold down Shift to suppress it
  • Fixed an issue that could cause TIFFs to be exported incorrectly
  • Fixed an issue where annotations would refuse to save
  • Minor bug fixes, tweaks and improvements

CinePlay 1.5.1 released with more detailed metadata

Recently we released CinePlay 1.5.1, a minor update to our professional Mac media player.

The biggest change in this version is that the app now displays more detailed metadata. CinePlay will now show all of the fields that are shown in tools like QT Edit and uses QT Edit's metadata database to give the fields more user-friendly descriptive names.

We've also made it so that clicking or navigating to a marker in the player window also selects that marker in the Markers window.

Other changes include:

  • Non-standard audio sample rates (e.g. 48.048kHz) now display correctly
  • Fixed an issue where jumping to a specific timecode position could be inaccurate with very long QuickTime movies
  • Fixed an issue where the marker edit window may not appear correctly for chapters
  • Added a Clear Cache for Current File option to the Help > Troubleshooting menu
  • Replaced Growl with native Notification Center alerts
  • Various small fixes and tweaks

CinePlay 1.4.4 for Mac with improved playlist support

Last week we released CinePlay 1.4.4, a minor update to our Mac media player for video professionals.

Flip/rotation improvements

Flip / rotation settings are now stored on a per-movie basis instead of being a global setting. This allows you to rotate movies and have the setting remembered when the file is reopened.

Additionally, flip/rotation is now taken into account when exporting movies and showing hover thumbnails.

Improved playlist support

Playlists are easier to use in full screen with a bug fix that prevents a sizing issue, as well as a new feature to show you the name of the clip when a new clip loads.

You can read the full list of changes here.

CinePlay 1.4.3 for Mac - default marker colors, quick marker inserts

CinePlay 1.4.3 is a minor update to our Mac-based media player for video professionals.

Default marker color

You can now set a default marker color in preferences. This means that whenever you press the M key it will default to the color you chose. This is a great timesaver if you have a specific marker color scheme within your company.

Quick insert markers

Press Shift+M to insert a marker without showing the marker edit dialog. This is great if you need to mark a specific position quickly and plan to edit the marker text later.

CinePlay 1.4.2 for Mac - thumbnail hover preview plus various fixes

CinePlay for Mac was just updated to version 1.4.2.

Thumbnail hover preview

When hovering over the timeline, you now see a thumbnail preview of the video under the mouse cursor. This is a useful way of quickly scrubbing through a video or finding the exact position to skip to. If desired, this can be switched off from the Preferences window.

Note that this currently only works for video files locally stored on your hard drive. It does not yet work with Kollaborate cloud videos but this will be coming soon.

Other changes

  • Added a thumbnail preview when hovering over the timeline (local files only)
  • When deleting a marker from the Markers window, the next marker along is now selected automatically
  • Fixed an issue where video could not be flipped
  • Fixed an issue where the app could display an Open dialog even when a movie loaded at startup
  • More accurate frame stepping
  • Improved timecode accuracy
  • Various other fixes and tweaks

CinePlay 1.4 for Mac - OS X 10.11 Split View, remembers window sizes and in and out points

CinePlay 1.4 is a major update to our Mac media player for video professionals.

OS X 10.11 Split View support

CinePlay is now compatible with the Split View feature of El Capitan. This allows you to hold down the mouse on the green full-screen icon and position two windows side-by-side.

This is extremely useful when using the Ganged Playheads feature to synchronize two movies and play them side-by-side.

New Kollaborate authentication API

This version is the first to support our new Kollaborate authentication API in a stable release (we have betas available for our other apps).

This is a completely new way of connecting your account to our service, which offers more security and flexibility.  Your old logins should be detected automatically so you don't need to take any action with the new version.

Movie preferences remembered

CinePlay will now remember window settings on a per-movie basis. So if you prefer a particular movie to always open filling the screen, this preference will be respected.

Any in and out points you set will also be remembered upon relaunching the app.

Other Changes

  • Added 2:1 and 2.39:1 aspect ratio masks
  • Markers now reorder themselves chronologically in the Markers window when you change their timecode
  • Fixed several issues where modifying a marker in the player would not immediately update the Markers window and vice versa
  • Additional minor bug fixes, tweaks and improvements

CinePlay is a powerful playback and note-taking tool for video professionals. To find out more, see the feature list, read the user manual, watch the overview video or download the free 15-day trial. Kollaborate customers get cloud functionality in CinePlay free of charge.

CinePlay 1.3 for Mac - audio waveforms, scrubbing and BWF timecode

We've just launched CinePlay 1.3 for Mac, a major new update to our professional media player.

Audio waveforms

CinePlay now dynamically displays waveforms for locally-stored audio files.

Audio scrubbing

Hear the current audio sample under the playhead as you drag it or navigate with the keyboard shortcuts. This can be disabled in preferences if desired.

Several timecode tweaks

  • Timecode is now detected in WAV audio files with BWF headers
  • Set the default timecode frame rate / format for audio files in preferences. Audio files are measured in samples, not frames, so setting this parameter manually allows you to match markers with the audio file when imported into your NLE.
  • Changes to how drop-frame timecode is calculated, which fixes a couple of edge-cases where it was incorrect.

Other changes

  • Markers can be exported to DVD Studio Pro chapter lists
  • Overlay windows are now hidden when full screen or switching to another movie
  • Full screen playback UI no longer auto-hides if the mouse is hovering over it
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the UI to not appear in full screen
  • Improved playback performance

CinePlay is a powerful playback and note-taking tool for video professionals. To find out more, see the feature list, read the user manual, watch the overview video or download the free 15-day trial. Kollaborate customers get cloud functionality in CinePlay free of charge.
