Today Adobe announced it's dropping support for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. While Adobe says it only affects a small number of customers, there is still a sizable number of users running the older OS, with some surveys suggesting as much as 19% usage.
Here are 7 reasons why you should upgrade from Snow Leopard to a newer version of OS X.
Apple is no longer fixing OS X bugs and some browser manufacturers no longer offer 10.6 support, leaving your system vulnerable.
Not just Adobe, many other apps no longer support 10.6, including all Apple and Avid applications and many hardware products and cameras. Some upcoming new products from us will require newer OS versions to take advantage of more recent technologies.
With every new OS release there is normally a speed boost from more efficient code execution, as well as new performance-enhancing technologies like AV Foundation, timer coalescing and compressed memory.
Useful new technologies for pro users since 10.6 include AV Foundation, compressed memory, tabbed Finder windows, file tags, Airdrop, Notification Center and Airplay Mirroring. This is in addition to the aforementioned performance-enhancing technologies.
While we don't shy away from embracing features from newer OSes if they have a clear benefit to users, maintaining two codebases for a small subset of users is complex and takes time away from feature development.
10.9 is free and 10.8 is $20 on the Apple Store.
Lion introduced several controversial features like reverse scrolling and an inability to Save As. Luckily some of those decisions were reversed in later versions and others are completely customizable. We have a guide to making newer versions behave more like Snow Leopard here.
We've just released Pro Maintenance Tools 2.0.20, a minor update to our suite of tools to maintain, optimize and troubleshoot your editing system.
Changes in this version include:
Pro Maintenance Tools is an essential toolkit for maintaining, optimizing and troubleshooting your editing system. To find out more see the feature list, read the user manual, watch the overview video or download the free 15-day trial.
We've just released updates to our video storage space calculators Video Space Calculator 1.1.1 for iOS and version 1.0.5 for Mac.
This update adds the following new codecs to both apps:
This takes the total number of supported codecs to over 80.
Video Space Calculator is a useful tool for estimating the final size of an encoded file or the number of video hours available on a particular disk. It is available from the Mac and iOS App Stores.
Yesterday we released Pro Media Tools 1.2 with several new features and tweaks.
You can now add, modify and delete metadata for a range of files at once. Any changes you make will apply to every file in the batch.
Other changes include automatically opening files in a batch if you select more than one and chapters are now displayed with their positions in timecode rather than seconds.
Adobe Premiere Pro is a lot fussier about the formatting of XML than FCP 7 so we've now created a separate export option for Premiere XML markers.
We've made several improvements to Render Watcher to make it more compatible with the latest versions of Adobe Media Encoder and Compressor.
Pro Media Tools is an invaluable toolkit to help editors and post production professionals enhance their media management workflows. To find out more view the feature list, read the user manual, watch the overview video or download the free 15-day trial.
Yesterday we released CinePlay 1.2.2 and CinePlay: Kollaborate Edition 1.2.2, minor updates to our iOS professional video players.
M3U8 playlists are now supported from the Add Web URL dialog. CinePlay will display a list of videos that updates dynamically if the playlist changes.
We've added new gestures based on user feedback. You can now pinch to zoom, tap on the left or right side of the frame to step one frame back and forth or tap with two fingers to step 24 frames.
Adding or editing a marker will now automatically pause and resume playback afterwards.
Having to exit the app and go to the iOS Settings app to change Kollaborate Server settings was confusing to users so you can now select the Kollaborate server directly in the login dialog. You can also save presets for common servers.
CinePlay is a useful mobile feedback and review tool, offering timecode support, markers, overlays, masks, cloud support and more. It's available for iOS devices on the App Store and a free version is also available to users of our Kollaborate cloud workflow platform.
It's come to our attention that the iOS note-taking app SpottingSession and video upload service ProSpotting will be shutting down on January 31st, rendering both products unusable after this date.
We're therefore offering a sale on our competing iOS note-taking app, Cut Notes, to help users make the switch. Cut Notes syncs timecode with Avid Media Composer for Mac (via a free plugin), Pro Tools and various other apps including Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro X.
Cut Notes will be $8.99 through February 7th (reduced from $12.99). This lower price is available to all customers. Unlike SpottingSession, Cut Notes is a standalone app that will continue to function even if we choose to discontinue it in future.
Cut Notes is integrated with our cloud workflow platform, Kollaborate, offering live commenting on cloud videos, group note-taking sessions and many other features. We're offering a 15% refund to new subscribers who purchase a 1 year subscription and can provide proof of a pre-existing ProSpotting subscription. The ProSpotting subscription should have been purchased before January 27th 2014. This promotion runs through February 7th too.
If you want to try out the apps before purchasing, sign up for a free no-obligation Kollaborate trial (no credit card needed) and download the free Kollaborate-only version of Cut Notes. You can then either buy the full version of the app or upgrade the free version via in-app purchase.
We're keen to hear feature requests and other feedback from SpottingSession customers and help you manage the transition smoothly, so feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.
Pro Versioner 2.0.14 is now out, offering FCPX 10.1 support alongside bug fixes and minor tweaks. Pro Versioner is a backup and versioning tool for your creative projects.
The app can now locate projects and events inside FCPX Libraries, by manually dragging in a library or through the Watch Folder feature. We recommend updating watch folders to point to your Movies folder or the root of your library storage location and search for .fcpproject and .fcpevent files.
We're also pleased to announce that FCPX 10.1 no longer automatically modifies projects and events that you're not using, meaning that Pro Versioner backups will no longer be triggered for old projects.
There are several other tweaks and bug fixes in this version which you can read about here.
Pro Versioner gives you peace of mind with extensive project backup cataloging, management and redundancy. To find out more, visit our overview page, read the user manual or download the free trial.
We've just released Pro Maintenance Tools 2.0.19, a minor update to our flagship maintenance and troubleshooting suite.
FCPX 10.1 included a media management revamp with the Libraries feature, which confused some of our users because it was not immediately clear how to access projects and events inside the library bundle (it's actually just a folder you can right-click to open).
We've now modified the Open dialogs in Corrupt Clip Finder and Project Repair to allow you to navigate inside libraries to access your projects and events.
Preference Manager now supports the under-the-hood changes in the Adobe Creative Cloud 7.2 update, which fixes an issue in which After Effects workspaces may not backup.
This is a subset of the complete changes in this version, which you can read here.

We’ve just released Kollaborate Server 1.0.5, a minor update to our in-house cloud workflow platform.
We’ve made various improvements to the installer based on user feedback, including more checks for dependencies and configuration problems, along with bug fixes and other improvements.
The installer will now allow you to resume where you left off if you need to restart your computer as well as detecting existing installations.
Additionally, licenses can now be installed automatically if your file permissions allow, otherwise you will be prompted to download and manually copy the license file as in previous versions.
Sharing files with people outside a project has now been streamlined. All users wishing to create a link must now have admin permissions (you can set this from the Team page). Creating a link and emailing it is now one step instead of two and previously-used email addresses appear in a popup menu for convenience.
The recipients of the link are shown in a list, including the number of times they viewed it. This only applies to people who were emailed the link directly through the site and only applies to links emailed from now on.
Navigating between files is much easier with the built-in file browser. Click the dropdown arrow to show it, then click on a file to switch to it.
Additionally, metadata tags are shown in their own tab below the player and the sync setting is also remembered so you don’t have to keep clicking it when switching between files for Cut Notes sync.
The upload form has inherited the automatic revisions option from Kollaborate Transfer, where a file will become a revision if a file with the same name (or the same with a version number such as myfile_0002) exists in the folder.
By default, after uploading you will now be shown the new file immediately. We’ve added a dropdown menu with various options to perform after uploading a file, so if you want to revert to the old behavior select "Edit metadata".
Kollaborate is a cloud workflow platform that keeps getting better and Kollaborate Server allows you to run it in-house on your own servers and storage. To find out more, view the feature list, read the Kollaborate Server documentation or sign up for the free 15-day trial.
Kollaborate 1.0.5 is now live on the cloud version of the site, offering many new features and improvements to our cloud workflow platform.
