Introducing free Cut Notes and CinePlay Kollaborate Editions

Today we are introducing free versions of Cut Notes and CinePlay for Kollaborate users. These versions are cut-down editions that only operate with Kollaborate and have no standalone functionality. A Kollaborate account is required to use them, but the apps can be used by both free and paid users.

Cut Notes is a useful and popular iPad note-taking tool. Sync to the playback of your NLE or web browser and quickly create timecoded notes on the fly, or even take part in group note-taking sessions.

CinePlay is a professional video player for iPad and iPhone that offers markers, cropping, safe areas, CDLs and more. You can also use it take part in Kollaborate Synced Sessions, where everyone can view a video at the same time, synced to one user's playhead.

CinePlay: Kollaborate Edition will only play movies located on Kollaborate storage and Cut Notes: Kollaborate Edition will not allow you to create local projects, however both can be unlocked to the full standalone versions by in-app purchase or by purchasing those versions separately on the store. If you already own the full versions, there is no need to download the free versions because they add no new functionality.

We've introduced these versions to add additional value to a Kollaborate subscription and to make it easy to share the apps with colleagues and clients. It's also a great way to demo the apps free of charge for 15 days too.

To find out more, sign up for a free trial of Kollaborate (no credit card required), then download Cut Notes: Kollaborate Edition and CinePlay: Kollaborate Edition and login to your Kollaborate account from within the apps.

Kollaborate 1.0.4 released - import comments, show all Shares and more

We've just released Kollaborate 1.0.4 to the cloud - a major update to our cloud workflow system that offers lots of new user-requested features and changes.

Import comments

Comments can now be imported from Final Cut Pro or Avid marker lists. To do this, click the Actions button on the player page, then click Import Comments. Select the type of marker list (FCP or Avid), then browse for the file and click Upload. The markers will be imported into the file at their existing timecode positions and you will be marked as the author of the comments.

View all Shares

You can now see every link you have shared on a project-wide basis without having to visit the Share page for every file individually. To do this click Share from the Actions dropdown on the player page or the arrow to the right of a file on the Files page. Then click All Links for this Project at the right-hand side. If you are an admin you can view links created by everyone in the project.

Admins can view all tasks

Admins can now view and modify tasks they do not own. Tasks by other users will now appear in the Tasks for Others or Completed Tasks sections.

Other changes

  • The Add User dialog on the Team page now shows user presets for all projects you own, not just the current one
  • Link users are now asked for their name only when they leave a comment
  • Your own views of a link you created no longer count towards the view count
  • Comments can be disabled on a per-file basis from the Edit Metadata page

A corresponding update to Kollaborate Server will be coming next week.

Kollaborate is a cloud workflow platform for video professionals centered around the Digital Rebellion app ecosystem. To find out more, view the feature list or sign up for the free no obligation 15-day trial.

Marker Import 2.0 - Adobe Premiere and FCPX event support

We've just launched Marker Import 2.0, a significant redesign and rebranding of Cut Notes Marker Import. Marker Import is a free tool for taking notes generated by Cut Notes or Kollaborate and importing them into your editing system. In addition to the existing Final Cut Pro 7 and FCPX project support, we've added the following new features.

Adobe Premiere support

Markers can now be imported into Adobe Premiere projects through FCP XML. Firstly, export your notes to a Final Cut Pro marker list from Cut Notes or Kollaborate, then export your sequence or project to Final Cut Pro XML within Adobe Premiere.

Open the marker list in Marker Import, then browse for the XML file. Select the sequence and adjust the frame offset if necessary, then click Import Markers to write them to the XML file. Reimport the XML file into Adobe Premiere and your sequence will be duplicated with the new markers.

Final Cut Pro X event support

Markers can be imported into a clip within an FCPX event file. Export your notes to a marker list, then export the event to XML from within FCPX.

Open the marker list in Marker Import, then browse for the XML file. Select the clip and adjust the frame offset if necessary, then click Import Markers. A duplicate of the event will automatically open in FCPX.

Other changes in this version include OS X 10.9 Mavericks compatibility and the ability to specify an offset in units other than frames.

Marker Import is a free download available from the right-hand sidebar of the Cut Notes site. You can view detailed guides to importing into different applications in the user manual.

Preference Manager 4.1 released with Logic Pro X support

We've just launched Preference Manager 4.1, a major update to our free preference management tool for Mac.

Logic Pro X support

Preference Manager now supports Logic Pro X, allowing you to trash, lock, backup and restore Logic Pro X preferences, channel strip settings, key commands, patches and plugin settings.

OS X 10.9 compatibility

It's also been modified to be compatible with OS X 10.9 Mavericks, which will be released later this month.

Mavericks makes some significant changes to the preference system in OS X, meaning that simply trashing .plist files in your Preferences directory may not be enough. Preference Manager works around this, so what some already consider to be an indispensable tool just became even more indispensable because the manual methods may no longer work reliably.

We've made a variety of other tweaks and you can read the list of changes here.

Preference Manager is an essential part of video and audio post production workflows around the world. To find out more, view the feature list, watch the video overview, read the user manual or download the app free.

CinePlay 1.2 released - Kollaborate Synced Sessions, CDLs and more

Earlier we launched CinePlay 1.2, a major update to our professional iOS video player.

Kollaborate Synced Sessions

You can now take part in Synced Sessions directly in CinePlay. This allows your CinePlay playhead to be controlled by someone else so you can take part in collaborative viewing sessions with multiple people on your project.

Note: CinePlay can only act as a guest and cannot currently host a session.

Kollaborate Color Decision Lists

You can now upload a Color Decision List to Kollaborate and have CinePlay color correct a video file according to the values in the CDL.

Here's how to do it:

1. Grade the video and export a Color Decision List from your grading software.

2. Upload the ungraded video to Kollaborate.

3. Upload the CDL to Kollaborate.

4. On the Files page, click the arrow to the right of the CDL and select Relationship Editor.

5. Click New Relationship.

6. Select the video, then set the relationship type to CDL.

7. Play the video in CinePlay and you will see the new grade. If you already had the video open, go back to the menu and select it again.

CinePlay will not apply the CDL if the movie's timecode does not fall within the bounds of the CDL clip start and end points. What this means is that you can use one CDL to apply different grades to different videos, or set the in and out points high to make it apply to multiple videos.

Kollaborate comment alerts

Like Cut Notes, CinePlay will now show an on-screen notification when someone else makes a note on the video you are watching.

Architecture overhaul

We've significantly overhauled the playback architecture which provides a base for many additional new features in future. We've also optimized the app to improve memory usage and performance and made it iOS 7-compatible.

You can read the full list of changes here.

CinePlay is an essential tool for video professionals, especially when used in conjunction with our Kollaborate cloud workflow platform. To find out more, view the feature list, read the user manual, watch the video overview or buy on the App Store.

Kollaborate Server 1.0.3 released - simpler installation and greater customization

We've just released Kollaborate Server 1.0.3, an important update to our in-house version of the Kollaborate workflow platform.

As well as the great new features of the cloud version, we've made some big additional changes.

Simpler installation

We've revamped the installation process to be more straightforward and require fewer steps. Kollaborate Server can now be configured directly from the installer, or at a later date, from the admin console.

Licensing is much simpler too - simply sign in with your kollaborate.tv login then copy the file it downloads to the location it tells you to.

Email Routing

Email has traditionally been the hardest feature to setup properly because you need to do a lot of things to make sure that the emails don't end up in recipients' spam inboxes.

We're now simplifying that by offering an Email Routing service. For a monthly fee of $10-20 (priced according to the Kollaborate Server package you chose) it will route emails through our servers to make sure they appear valid to email clients.

Not only does this simplify installation, it also makes Kollaborate Server cheaper to run because you can now run it through a dynamic DNS service without penalty instead of paying for a fixed IP address.

Greater customization

You can now modify the site logo and color scheme from the Tools > Customize Style section of the admin console.

Also, per user feedback, we've also made departments and positions modifiable from the admin console.

Windows support

Kollaborate Server is now supported on Windows, and we have provided Windows installation instructions and installation scripts.

The full list of changes is available on the Kollaborate Server page after logging in.

Kollaborate app storage for non-subscribers

Today we made some changes to our private storage policy on Kollaborate. Now anyone involved in a project created by a trial user or active subscriber can make use of app storage, a feature previously only open to subscribers.

This opens up lots of great features to invited users including:

Non-subscribers get 100 MB of app storage, which should be more than enough because the files are typically a few kilobytes each. This is free additional storage and does not come out of subscriber storage space.

We've also made some improvements to Synced Sessions too. The sync indicator now changes colors to indicate the buffering status of all clients. Orange means one or more clients are still loading the video and green means everyone's ready to start.

Kollaborate is a cloud workflow platform centered around the Digital Rebellion app ecosystem. To find out more view the feature list or sign up for the free no obligation 15-day trial.

Major Kollaborate update - Synced Sessions, sharing improvements, marker export overhaul and more

We've just launched a big update to Kollaborate with many new features and tweaks based on user feedback.

Synced Sessions

You can now watch movies in a group with one person in charge of the playhead on everyone else's computer. The remote systems will update as the host plays and navigates the timeline.

To use Synced Sessions, click Sessions in the navigation bar and then click New Session. Give the session a name and pick people to invite to it. The green bar means you are currently in a session and you will be alerted when others join. Select a file and it will be loaded on everyone's computer. To view another file, go back to the Files page and select it, at which point everyone else's screens will update with the new file. The session remains open until the owner ends it.

Synced Sessions is currently in beta so please report any issues or feature requests to us.

Sharing

You now have control over whether or not to require a password to access a link and can customize the random password to make it easier to remember. Emails can now include a custom message.

View counts can be reset, which is important because you will now be notified the first time your link is viewed. So if you check the link to make sure it works, remember to reset the view count so you'll be notified when the recipient views it.

Comment Exporting

Comment exporting has been overhauled. You can now choose from a range of applications or export a plain-text list of markers. We've added Edius CSV support too.

You can also choose to ignore replies or combine notes at the same timecode position into a single entry, which is useful for applications that ignore multiple markers at the same position.

Avid users also have a choice of the video track to place the markers onto.

Revisions

You now have more control over revision management. You can turn revisions back into independent files or combine independent files into revisions.

Tasks

You can now specify the exact time that a task is due. This is automatically converted to the correct timezone which simplifies working with people around the world. Just remember to set your timezone on the Profile page.

Kollaborate Transfer

We also updated Kollaborate Transfer to 1.0.4. It can now upload larger files and add pre- and post-roll to encoded movies, which is useful if you need to add slates or copyright information at the beginning of a clip.

Other Changes

  • The maximum file size limit has been raised from 2 GB to 4 GB
  • New comment emails now show the timecode position
  • Video and audio files can be made download-only
  • Aliases can be automatically relinked to the latest version
  • Fixed an issue that could cause thumbnails to appear enlarged

Kollaborate is a cloud workflow platform that is fully integrated with Digital Rebellion products. To find our more visit the features page or sign up for the free 15-day trial.
