Cut Notes and Kollaborate discounts for SpottingSession customers

It's come to our attention that the iOS note-taking app SpottingSession and video upload service ProSpotting will be shutting down on January 31st, rendering both products unusable after this date.

We're therefore offering a sale on our competing iOS note-taking app, Cut Notes, to help users make the switch. Cut Notes syncs timecode with Avid Media Composer for Mac (via a free plugin), Pro Tools and various other apps including Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro X.

Cut Notes will be $8.99 through February 7th (reduced from $12.99). This lower price is available to all customers. Unlike SpottingSession, Cut Notes is a standalone app that will continue to function even if we choose to discontinue it in future.

Cut Notes is integrated with our cloud workflow platform, Kollaborate, offering live commenting on cloud videos, group note-taking sessions and many other features. We're offering a 15% refund to new subscribers who purchase a 1 year subscription and can provide proof of a pre-existing ProSpotting subscription. The ProSpotting subscription should have been purchased before January 27th 2014. This promotion runs through February 7th too.

If you want to try out the apps before purchasing, sign up for a free no-obligation Kollaborate trial (no credit card needed) and download the free Kollaborate-only version of Cut Notes. You can then either buy the full version of the app or upgrade the free version via in-app purchase.

We're keen to hear feature requests and other feedback from SpottingSession customers and help you manage the transition smoothly, so feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.

Pro Versioner 2.0.14 released with FCPX 10.1 support

Pro Versioner 2.0.14 is now out, offering FCPX 10.1 support alongside bug fixes and minor tweaks. Pro Versioner is a backup and versioning tool for your creative projects.

The app can now locate projects and events inside FCPX Libraries, by manually dragging in a library or through the Watch Folder feature. We recommend updating watch folders to point to your Movies folder or the root of your library storage location and search for .fcpproject and .fcpevent files.

We're also pleased to announce that FCPX 10.1 no longer automatically modifies projects and events that you're not using, meaning that Pro Versioner backups will no longer be triggered for old projects.

There are several other tweaks and bug fixes in this version which you can read about here.

Pro Versioner gives you peace of mind with extensive project backup cataloging, management and redundancy. To find out more, visit our overview page, read the user manual or download the free trial.

Pro Maintenance Tools 2.0.19 released with FCPX 10.1 compatibility

We've just released Pro Maintenance Tools 2.0.19, a minor update to our flagship maintenance and troubleshooting suite.

FCPX 10.1 compatibility

FCPX 10.1 included a media management revamp with the Libraries feature, which confused some of our users because it was not immediately clear how to access projects and events inside the library bundle (it's actually just a folder you can right-click to open).

We've now modified the Open dialogs in Corrupt Clip Finder and Project Repair to allow you to navigate inside libraries to access your projects and events.

Improved Preference Manager Creative Cloud compatibility

Preference Manager now supports the under-the-hood changes in the Adobe Creative Cloud 7.2 update, which fixes an issue in which After Effects workspaces may not backup.

This is a subset of the complete changes in this version, which you can read here.

Pro Maintenance Tools is an essential toolkit for maintaining, optimizing and troubleshooting your editing system. To find out more see the feature list, read the user manual, watch the overview video or download the free 15-day trial.

Kollaborate Server 1.0.5 released - installer improvements, sharing overhaul and more

We’ve just released Kollaborate Server 1.0.5, a minor update to our in-house cloud workflow platform.

Improved installer

We’ve made various improvements to the installer based on user feedback, including more checks for dependencies and configuration problems, along with bug fixes and other improvements.

The installer will now allow you to resume where you left off if you need to restart your computer as well as detecting existing installations.

Additionally, licenses can now be installed automatically if your file permissions allow, otherwise you will be prompted to download and manually copy the license file as in previous versions.

Sharing overhaul

Sharing files with people outside a project has now been streamlined. All users wishing to create a link must now have admin permissions (you can set this from the Team page). Creating a link and emailing it is now one step instead of two and previously-used email addresses appear in a popup menu for convenience.

The recipients of the link are shown in a list, including the number of times they viewed it. This only applies to people who were emailed the link directly through the site and only applies to links emailed from now on.

Player changes

Navigating between files is much easier with the built-in file browser. Click the dropdown arrow to show it, then click on a file to switch to it.

Additionally, metadata tags are shown in their own tab below the player and the sync setting is also remembered so you don’t have to keep clicking it when switching between files for Cut Notes sync.

Uploading improvements

The upload form has inherited the automatic revisions option from Kollaborate Transfer, where a file will become a revision if a file with the same name (or the same with a version number such as myfile_0002) exists in the folder.

By default, after uploading you will now be shown the new file immediately. We’ve added a dropdown menu with various options to perform after uploading a file, so if you want to revert to the old behavior select "Edit metadata".

Other changes

  • Files with comments now show an icon next to their filename (see below).
  • "This movie is not optimized" banners can be disabled in the Configure section of Admin Area.
  • Synced Sessions can now be removed.
  • Fixed an issue that could enable non-owners to end a synced session
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent messages being marked as read
  • UI improvements to the Move Items dialog
  • Documentation overhaul

Kollaborate is a cloud workflow platform that keeps getting better and Kollaborate Server allows you to run it in-house on your own servers and storage. To find out more, view the feature list, read the Kollaborate Server documentation or sign up for the free 15-day trial.

2013 - Year in Review

2014 is now here so here's a look back at the past twelve months.

This was our biggest year yet with the launch of our new cloud workflow service, Kollaborate. As well as being a video review tool with timecode integration and marker exports, it’s also a platform we are building all of our products around. Cloud-integrated apps include Post Haste, Preference Manager, Cut Notes and CinePlay (the latter two also have free Kollaborate-only versions for clients and colleagues).

If you’re reluctant to upload data to the cloud we also offer Kollaborate Server for businesses to run in-house on their own servers and storage.

We also launched CinePlay for iOS - a professional video player with timecode overlays, markers, masking, cropping and integration with Digital Rebellion products such as Cut Notes, Editmote and Kollaborate.

In addition we released major updates for Marker Import, Cut Notes, EditCodes and Preference Manager. In total we released over 80 free updates to our tools.

Our most popular free app was FCS Remover and our most popular paid app was Pro Maintenance Tools. Our most popular iOS app was Video Space Calculator.

The most popular blog posts of 2013 were:
How to locate corrupt clips on your timeline
Final Cut Pro X hangs when loading a project
How to sync metadata between QuickTime movies
Avid Codec Guide
5 hidden features in Adobe Premiere CS6

Things you may have missed:

So what’s next? As well as continuing to improve our existing products, we are planning additional product launches in 2014 and will be putting extra emphasis on expanding the range of platforms we develop for. Keep an eye on the blog, follow us on Twitter or subscribe to the mailing list to be alerted when new products and updates are available.

Pro Maintenance Tools 2.0.18 and Pro Media Tools 1.1.14 released

We've just released Pro Maintenance Tools 2.0.18 and Pro Media Tools 1.1.14.

Plugin Manager improvements

Plugin Manager is faster and more responsive if you have a large number of plugins installed on your system.

You can also boost performance by switching on the option to ignore FxFactory plugins in Preferences, as Plugin Manager cannot manage these plugins and they must be modified directly within the FxFactory app.

FCPX 10.1 and Compressor 4.1 compatibility

Pro Maintenance Tools is now compatible with FCPX 10.1 and Compressor Repair now works with Compressor 4.1. An update for the standalone version of Compressor Repair will be out soon.

Pro Media Tools is app-agnostic so no changes needed to be made to support 10.1.

QT Edit timecode improvements

QT Edit can now set timecode from an arbitrary position within the movie. This makes it possible to set timecode from the first frame of picture without having to calculate the length of black, slates and bars before it.

For a full list of changes, please see the changelogs for Pro Maintenance Tools and Pro Media Tools or visit each suite's respective product page to download a free 15-day trial.

Cut Notes now syncs with Avid Media Composer and Symphony

By popular demand, we have released an Avid timecode sync plugin for our iPad note-taking app Cut Notes. This is a free Mac plugin that sends timecode from your Media Composer or Symphony sequence to the iPad. We've qualified it for Media Composer 6+ but it will most likely work on earlier versions too.

Here's how to set it up:

1. Make sure Avid is closed.

2. Download the installer from the sidebar on the Cut Notes site and run it to install the plugin.

3. In Finder, launch Audio MIDI Setup in the Utilities folder under Applications. Go to Window > Show MIDI Window and then double-click the icon marked Network.

4. Click the + button under My Sessions and name the new session Cut Notes. Tick the box next to it to enable it. Under "Who may connect to me" at the bottom, set it to Anyone. In the Bonjour Name field, enter the name of your computer if it is not already set.

5. Now launch Cut Notes on your iPad, tap the Sync button and set it to MIDI. The name of your iPad should appear in the Audio MIDI Setup window on your Mac in the Directory list. Select it and click Connect. It should then appear under Participants on the right-hand side. You will need to repeat this step whenever you launch Cut Notes.

6. Relaunch Avid.

7. Go to Clip > New Video Track to create a blank track.

8. In the Effects Browser, browse to Digital Rebellion and drag "Cut Notes Timecode Plugin" onto the filler in the new track.

9. If necessary, set the starting timecode and drop frame flag in the Effect Editor.

10. Click the Video Track Monitor icon next to the track to make sure it will be shown.

11. Scrub the timeline and the timecode should appear in Cut Notes.

Tips

1. Do not render the Cut Notes plugin.
2. It may be easier to work without the effect attached and add it to the timeline before playing back.
3. The effect should be above all other tracks in the timeline.
4. Make sure the effect begins at the first frame and remember to extend it if your timeline is lengthened.

The Avid plugin is a free download for Cut Notes users. For more details on importing notes into Avid or syncing with other applications, please see the user manual.

Pro Media Tools 1.1.13 released - QT Edit conform overhaul, new metadata presets

We've just released Pro Media Tools 1.1.13, a minor update to our suite of media management tools.

Improved compatibility with App Nap

If you leave an app processing in the background while you work in another application, OS X 10.9 may suspend it. All the relevant tools in the suite are now optimized for this so that they will continue running.

QT Edit conform overhaul

We made significant changes to the frame rate conform feature in version 1.1.11 but this caused issues with a small number of files, so we're now intelligently determining when to use the old and new methods of conversion depending on the type of file being conformed.

New QT Edit metadata presets

We've updated several of the existing metadata presets as well as adding new presets for Panasonic and MXF.

The full list of changes is available here.

Kollaborate Server 1.0.4 released with redesigned installer

We've just released Kollaborate Server 1.0.4, a major update to our in-house cloud workflow solution.

Redesigned Installer

We've completely redesigned the installer to guide users step-by-step through the installation process. The installer will detect problems and try to automatically fix them, but if it can't you are provided with detailed instructions specific to your operating system, architecture and web root location.

The rest of the changes were discussed last week in the cloud release but here's a rundown.

Import comments

Comments can now be imported from Final Cut Pro or Avid marker lists. To do this, click the Actions button on the player page, then click Import Comments. Select the type of marker list (FCP or Avid), then browse for the file and click Upload. The markers will be imported into the file at their existing timecode positions and you will be marked as the author of the comments.

View all Shares

You can now see every link you have shared on a project-wide basis without having to visit the Share page for every file individually. To do this click Share from the Actions dropdown on the player page or the arrow to the right of a file on the Files page. Then click All Links for this Project at the right-hand side. If you are an admin you can view links created by everyone in the project.

Admins can view all tasks

Admins can now view and modify tasks they do not own. Tasks by other users will now appear in the Tasks for Others or Completed Tasks sections.

Other changes

  • The Add User dialog on the Team page now shows user presets for all projects you own, not just the current one
  • Link users are now asked for their name only when they leave a comment
  • Your own views of a link you created no longer count towards the view count
  • Comments can be disabled on a per-file basis from the Edit Metadata page

Kollaborate is a cloud workflow platform that keeps getting better. To find out more, view the feature list, read the Kollaborate Server documentation or sign up for the free 15-day trial.
